Welcome to the ramblings of your resident Jamaican Gordon Swaby; sometimes cynical, sometimes pessimistic other times realistic, whatever it is you\'ll find it here.
I\'m opinionated and proud.
I’m sure the whole world is anticipating the inauguration of the first Black president Barack Obama tomorrow. Obviously not all of us could be there physically, but it’s quite possible for us to be able to know what’s going on..digitally. Lifehacker thought it prudent to put together a list of sources for us to indulge tomorrow
Most of the places i can vouch for, others i’m not sure, but seeing as it’s from lifehacker i’m sure it’s all solid, so check them out and be sure to watch amazing history unfold tomorrow.
My first rant for 2009, why did it have to be about you Google? With your snappy ” Don’t be evil” slogan; well sorry to burst you’re bubble Mr. Sergery Brin and Larry Page, but you’re one big sack of evil right now with you new Favicon. To some this may be trivial and geeky, but to me something as simple as a favicon means the world, call me geeky, call me picky, but I’m highly annoyed. I mean seriously, what was wrong with the original favicon?
My first rant about there idiotic first instance sad excuse for a favicon was in June of last year, they’ve come up with an even worst one since that time. There newest one, which also seems to be the final one is even WORSE, i’d feel better if they said this was not the final, but sadly it is, but such is life, i guess i’ll get used to it. Now my tab bar is all uhm.. weirded out *sighs*
Apparently this one incorporates all of google’s logo color scheme into it. Maybe i should stop complaining, maybe it isn’t that bad, who knows i might get used to it, but for now i hate it.
Read google’s blog post regarding there new favicon here
Yikes! I could go on and on and on about how fast the year went by, but there’s no need because before i could finish I’d be going on about how fast 2009 went. 2008 was a rather fruitful year for me in terms of personal development. I finished High School, I was featured in the gleaner, then i became apart of the gleaner, i had my first radio interview, met a lot of cool people and i developed new relationships among other things. But enough about me.
Things haven’t been all peach and roses in 2008, there have been some rather depressing times here in JA, from the spate of kidnappings, hurricane Dean… no wait was it dean or? erhm.. no wait it was Ivan *calls a friend* Oh,oh,oh it was Gustav, oh my these hurricanes have become annual annoyances occurrences it’s so hard to keep up with the names. And then there was that Head Girl’s death, such a sad time. But it hasn’t been all bad, i recall the countless euphoric moments we all had as Jamaicans at Olympics, not necessarily a Jamaican Milestone, but the world celebrated Obama’s leap to the first black president in American History, a great moment in time, to be talked about and cherished for years to come.
I’m not one to dwell though, let’s hope for the best in 2000 and Shine! Let me dive right into the best of 2008, I’m making it a tradition here at Gordonswaby.com; last year’s selection was rather awesome, but this year is even better. Last year was the mother load, so i guess this year is the father load right? heh:
N.B Like last year stuff listed here are not necessarily created in 2008; It is all based on what i liked in that specific year.
The Best Movies of 2008
#1:HARD CANDY: Definitely the BEST movie of the year, with all the kidnappings happening in Jamaica and elsewhere i would have loved to see a story like this make it to the front page of the paper, but that’s wishful thinking. A MUST watch.
Hard Candy is a 2006 independent psychological thriller film focusing on a confrontation between a sexual predator and a 14-year-old girl he attempts to ensnare. Source: Wikipedia
#2:DARK KNIGHT: Heath Ledger? Can you say best actor of ALL TIME, in all honesty his superb acting in Dark Knight is tempting me to go watch Broke Back Mountain, *sighs* yes, just to see his superb acting once more. Such a shame that he died. I still think the movie should have been called “The Joker” and not “Dark Knight” though.
The Dark Knight is a 2008 American superhero film directed and co-written by Christopher Nolan. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, the film is part of Nolan’s Batman film series and a sequel to 2005’s Batman Begins. Christian Bale reprises the lead role. Source: Wikipedia
#3:IRONMAN: Ok I’ll admit it….I pirated it, as godly as this film was, i didn’t get around to watching it at the theaters, but alas with the poor quality, it was still enjoyable. narcissism and high tech gadgets all in one film? sweet.
Iron Man is a 2008 superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and master engineer with a plethora of playboy vices who builds a powered exoskeleton and becomes the technologically advanced superhero, Iron Man. The Best quotes of 2008
“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”
If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.
We should get into the habit of reading inspirational books, looking at inspirational pictures, hearing inspirational music, associating with inspirational friends. -Alfred A. Montapert
Apathy can be overcome by enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can only be aroused by two things: first, an ideal, with takes the imagination by storm, and second, a definite intelligible plan for carrying that ideal into practice
Love is blind, but friendship closes its eyes.
HAVE A WONDERFUL 2009
P.S This is my longest post yearly
UPDATE:
A cool video showing all the best songs of 2008, according to the billboard
Killing our criminals is such a nice thing to do. Heck, we’re doing them a favor. After all their not that bad right? killing our children, raping our women, creating havoc at every turn, that’s not really all that bad is it? I’m one of those naysayers about capital punishment. To be frank, i think this incentive ( Yes, that’s what it is, an incentive for criminals, “I don’t like my life so I’m willing to go) is what criminals are looking for. I’ve heard time and time before criminals uttering words like “I prefer to lose my life, than to end up in prison”, losing there life seems to be the preferred choice so i should think we’ll be doing them a favor by hanging them.
What i think will happen is that criminals will get far more vicious; they know they’re going to die or get caught sooner or later so there’s this heightened level of indifference on there part, causing them to commit even more heinous acts without any regret or remorse whatsoever. A criminal’s only resolve is the inevitable death they’ll face (by whatever means, it’s like crossing a road without looking left or right, hoping you’ll get hit), whether it be death by the police, or death by hanging.
I always say, never object to an idea unless you have a suitable alternative, so here’s my alternative to hanging:
Let’s NOT be nice to these criminals. Let’s put them to work. I say we put iron collars around their neck, that will shock them( not kill, but they’ll feel excruciating pain if they try to remove it) let’s plant GPS trackers into their skin and set them to work, let’s dress them in pink prison garments and set them to work all day with only one meal. Let them clean this country, clean the gutters, weed the grass, plant trees etc. And when they finally die of exhaustion because of ill treatment, we’ll be satisfied that they contributed to the welfare of the country before they died, and what better way to reward them for their “hard” work than to dig a nice big hole to throw them in when they die.
But, sadly this is all wishful thinking, the Criminal Human rights advocates would be all over this like flies on feces, but who cares? I’m sure we could get them to shut up, after all it’s for the betterment of the country and as a group people have power .
Yes, this will cost money, but it would be worth it, the country would definitely grow. Hanging is like a bad road needing an urgent fix, you find cheap methods of fixing it, but the road will only last so long and you end up spending more to fix it again( and this process is repeated without any substantial benefit), why not invest time and good money to make it a wonderful solid road to drive on?
“No Wait! This is all to barbaric, the aforementioned idea is horrible, how could you think such a thing Gordon!…” As if the criminals aren’t barbaric.
Life and it’s complexities, it’s intricacies,it’s intimacies, and it’s spontaneity. I have a special love for the latter mentioned word. Approx six(6) months ago i met someone online,;just another random person I’d come across. Oblivious at the time about how such relationship would evolve into something amazing. A few days prior to meeting this person they did not matter to me…not one bit ( and I’m assuming this feeling was mutual). But both our lives become intertwined…like strans of spaghetti hahaha , some would call it “destiny”, whatever you’d call it, it seemed inevitable…the meeting that is.
It evolved, it’s still evolving and it will continue to evolve, with all the road blocks, large road blocks,we shall clear these road blocks together, and beyond the road blocks is total joy, happiness… if not total euphoria. You’ve helped me grow, I’m still growing and I’m enjoying it, where we go next i don’t know, but I’m quite excited, ecstatic to say the least. Let’s make this journey together, let’s make it an amazing one.
Our paths have crossed, they’ve crossed for good, it was indeed Spontaneous, and i’m loving it.
So yes, like any 18 yr old would say I’m now “legal”; based on my country’s laws anyway, i can now drink, Marry(huh?), take part in unscrupulous activities et al. It’s a wonderful feeling, even though I’ve been indulging in the aforementioned escapades for a while now, but we won’t dwell.
I’ve been browsing through some of my previous blog posts and i’m laughing. I’m impressed by how my writing and deduction skills improve each year ( or so i think), it’s really liberating and makes me feel quite good to know i’m not on a downward spiral. I must admit, i’m nowhere near a man, but i’m not a boy either, i’m well on my way, three cheers for me:) Happy Birthday to Me and I HOPE to see many more years.
