On the matter of my Writing…

Over the last few days or so I’ve done what some may call a “self-evaluation” of my writing style.  It tends to be a bit cynical, pessimistic and a bit raunchy sometimes.  I must confess, initially i wrote like that with the sole purpose of drawing attention to my posts, but i don’t think it’s necessary anymore; my blog has far outgrown that – something which i never expected to happen.

I always thought it would have been read by a couple people here and there; but not by thousands of Jamaicans and other people around the world; oh my I’m elated If not a pessimistic writer, then what? Certainly not unrealistic optimism.
After my two-ish years or so of writing i gradually garnered the penchant for writing like this so basically I’ve become quite accustomed and comfortable with it. I honestly don’t think I’d feel comfortable writing in any other way and if I’m not comfortable writing then why continue?

My question to everyone is; would it OK for me to continue writing like this? Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

P.S As some of you may or may not know i Got featured in The Gleaner’s Paper dated June 21st ; on that day alone i received more than 60+ emails from well wishers and people asking me for help.  I honestly am OVERWHELMED and i sincerly thank everyone for commending me, i really appreciate it; i tried my best to reply to everyone but that was…well impossible, time simply does not permit.  Nationwide News Network has offered me an interview on there radio program Wednesday at 8, i hope that everyone decides to listen. You may go here and listen online just click ” Listen Now” and it will automatically launch the radio in your system’s local media player.

    I just heard your interview This Morning on Nationwide Radio.
    I visited the website on seeing the article in the newspaper as well. I’m quite impressed.
    Please continue to DRIVE TOWARD YOUR GOALS, son. I say “son” because you have responsible parents who have nurtured you on the right path thus far. I believe Jamaicans have a function to fulfil in the world as outlined in our National Pledge! I know the realization of that function now rests squarely in the Minds, Hearts and Hands of the young people of your generation and lower —my generation and that above has generally FAILED to discharge this function — and IRONICALLY its Leaders are trying by ALL MEANS POSSIBLE to blame that failure on the younger generations! How preposterously DISHONEST!!

    Now, about your writing style? You MUST BE YOU! Make sure you ask Almighty God – before you write – to guide you … then write EXACTLY WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND!!! Cynical, Realistic, Futuristic, Pessimistic, Shocking, Raunchy, whatever … please only be respectful of all peoples. That of course, does NOT mean that you must be hypocritical about the ISSUES you address. You MUST BE TRUE to yourself first of course!

  • Congrats on being featured in the news paper. I immediately wondered if it was you when i saw the article. As for your writing skills, it's an expression of your personality and if people are still reading your blog then it must be ok.

  • How about you just do you and write in whatever way makes you most comfortable? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a large part of blogging about expressing yourself in your own unique and peculiar way -whether it be cynical, pessimistic, optimistic or (God-forbid) just blah?

    I don't even know what you're so worried about, because if so many of us are reading your 'cynical' blog up til now, then you must be doing something right...

    I always thought you were a much better writer that you showed on your blog but it's your space to do whatever you want and I am glad you have decided to change up you writing style a bit. Kudos!
  • I embrace the fact that you have the desire to evolve. It's ok to shift gears, go back to basics and try something new. You will never make a decision until you try because decisions have power. They usually take us to the exact place where we need to be. It is the wavering back and forth that is dangerous; allowing you to fall prey to the choices people will make for you. Progress means ease, relief and peace. The best can always be better. The fast becomes fastest. The great becomes the greatest.
    Guess what? Whatever Gordon decides will be valuable and worthy for recognition.

    Congratulations on your recognition & success!!!! I am new to your site, a friend from the U.S. saw your article and sent it to me, since our last names are familiar thinking we were related. Nonetheless, to address your question.....I think that you should continue/start to write in an optimistic, appealing, mind-challenging style. We have enough pessism and cynics to listen to, we need a "mental moment" of sanity. We need someone to bring to the forefront the "good, overseen, little acts of kindness, along with the challenges of not being like the next person - Who did you wrong?". It is so easy to blend in, Why not be the individuals we are meant to be and stand out for good, even if it nuh nuf, we ALL have some form of good in all of us? Remind people of the direct line of communication we have with God...our God-given voice - our conscious. Don't drown it out - it may just be the lifeline you need. **1Luv** - Laureen Swaby
