Sex and CXC’s…The Hidden Truth, or Not So Hidden
Articles, Interesting, Jamaica/Politics, Personal April 10th, 2008I wrote this article for up and coming magazine, all comments have been “thumbs up Gordon” apart from one which i will ignore which went something like this: “sound like some ole woman writing from her bed”, lol i love his critique, but i’ll still ignore it:). Here’s the article:
Not many would wish to elaborate on such an ignominious topic. Sex in schools is real and it’s something we all have to address whether we approve of it or not.
After all those lectures, workshops and practice, the CXC results still seem to be unfavorable. Many may ask why, but for some students the answer could never be more obvious…there minds are elsewhere. The obvious or not so obvious answer is sex. Students love it and they can’t seem to get enough of it. It’s a consumer of time, body and mind.
Mind you, there are many teenagers who are sexually active and still manage to get notable grades; while there Is the vast majority who can’t seem to get it right.
Compared to studying for CXC’s and taking part in good, good coitus interaction teens tend to choose the latter; sex seems easier and fun and the more girls it’s done with the more you seem to be “respected” in that place called school. Sure! there are CXC’s to study for, but who cares, they surely don’t. Now don’t get me wrong relationships and sex are not the only distractions, but it is surely a major one.
The mentality of these teens is “do it now and worry about the consequences later”. That statement can be applied to many things in teenage life, heck it could become the zeitgeist teenage slogan.
Many will listen, but not many will hear, they may not be regretful now, but one thing is certain, many will lament on there shortcomings later.

Great article. I focused mostly on my subjects in high school. Too much in fact. I guess most teens aren’t like me.

They will definitely lament on their shortcomings by placing greater import and significance on sex rather than their examinations!!Indeed,times have certainly changed!

1- Do you have any statistics or even a half-hearted study done which indicates that sex is the factor which is keeping grades down?
2- Do you believe that sex, among teens in the CXC taking age group, is more prevalent now than 10 years ago?
If you honestly answered anything but “no” to both questions I would be most surprised.
High school sex has always been around, I highly doubt that the percentage of students forming part of the active statistic has risen. It just seems like it because thanks to cell phone cameras which were NOT prevalent 10 years ago, their actions are now being seen.
In summary, teens aren’t having any more sex than they did, it may just seem that way with all the videos being released. And as you said many students find the time to study and maintain a healty sexual relationship. So perhaps you’re barking up the wrong tree, there is no one reason for the grade situation, but i doubt teen sex is the problem for most.

Let me pose 2 questions to you.
Are you still apart of the High School System?
When was the last time you visited or Spoken to a High School Student?
Many of my friends only come to school because they have this girl that they MUST see when in reality they should be at home studying, and it’s not that they come to school and go to classes, they only go there for the girls.
And i thought about the fact that it was being done then, but you have to take into consideration other factors, the media having sex all over in advertisements, movies, etc. Family values have changed alot has changed basically can’t be bothered to go into it, so i DO think students are having alot more sex then they were back then, and the camera cell phones complement the practise too.

I left high school 2 years ago, not a long time. I have a few friends still in high school. My sister is in high school now and talk on a deep enough level. So no, i don’t think i’m out of touch with what’s happening in high schools.
That said sex in the media was just as prominent as it was in 1998 as it is now. Parents were letting the tv raise children just as much as now. I bought X-rated magazines and alcohol back then and no one stopped me. The only thing i see that has really blown up more is putting more homosexual shows on tv. The “bad” influences were just as prevalent.
Let me clarify. Teen sex might distract some people, but if it wasnt that, it would be somthing else distracting them. I dont blame teen sex because i see that as a natural part of life.
There are things called determination, and time management, and pushing youself to achieve.
THAT is were the problem lies, these values are in a decline. If we build up these things and drill it into peoples head the way it was drilled into mine, you know that you will set aside a time to deal with work.

For once i agree, i agree with you, but i still wanted a healthy debate:P, the only reason i wrote on that side of the fence is because of the topic i got to write about, so meh, thanks for the lively discussion though
