Condoms And Jamaican High Schools
Articles, Interesting, Jamaica/Politics January 28th, 2008
As a High School student i feel it necessary to elaborate on such a hot issue. I was planning on doing so for a while now, but i did not feel the urge to do so until a while ago when i read stunner’s thoughts on the whole situation. I feel it would be easier for me to expound on the situation seeing as i am one of those on the inside looking out.
So all the officials have been arguing whether or not they should issue condoms in schools, you want to know what i think… i think it doesn’t matter. Condoms are not the problem it’s the mentality of teens, that’s the real problem. Issuing condoms won’t change a darn thing, because the fact is they don’t want and will not use them.
Getting condoms isn’t a problem for teens, they cost what $120? I’ve spoken to a couple friends and the truth of the matter is they don’t want to use condoms. Why? because they claim know sex is alot better without it, and the feeling is mutual( Girl And Boy), they both prefer non-use of condoms. AIDS you say? They’ll laugh that off because they don’t care about that either, there mentality is that “Anything happen, happen” they’ve made up there mind about the outcome of non use of condoms. Whether it be pregnancy or AIDS.
“Maybe we need to go back to the drawing board: remove the sexual stimulants in our entertainment and advertisements, instill good moral values in our children by being better parents, talk with our children about sex, closely monitor our children, implement stronger penalties for adults who take advantage of the youths, and of course teach them about safe sex.” by Stunner
I laughed at that paragraph when i read it, i mean come on who you kidding? That will never happen or if it does happen it will never work. Why you ask? Because sexual content will always be available you can never prevent them (teens) from seeing it

Sad but true man. Even if we teach the the consequences of their actions, young people tend to think that they’re invincible, so…well, I’m out of ideas.

It is a dire situation, but we at least have to try to reach to as much as possible… somehow.

i agree, they should not go around thinking it will be “alright” in putting condoms in schools …..just a waste of time!

Very interesting….It still comes back to strong parenting and reinforcing moral values. Only God can help us through this kind of issue. Horse gone through the gate long time in terms of this issue.

Saying God will help us will not change anything, there’s more to it than that, as they say “God Helps Those who help themselves”

The distribution of condoms within the Jamaican secondary schools is quite recommended. Due to the fact that the “moral fabric” of the land is worn and thus, abstinence campans have drastically failed…leaving the only other option, which is to limit the “right to the pursuit of happiness” our teens possess by controlling their freedom with the distribution of condoms. Controlled freedom works!!!

Ok, seriously .. the issue of condoms in school and many social problems we face are way pass the idea of morals… so all the old people need to get a hold of themselves .. and stop living in the dark … and realise that its 2008 ..not 1962. And even then they were still f… ahem .. having sex - so abstinence was never working .. so I dont know why they all think it will now.

I want to salute the founder and all the contributors of this site. I think this dialogue is very healthy and commendable for young people. The truth is, we need to reason more. We have a culture that fails to use our God given resource called the brain. We are cowards when we fail to engage our leaders, legislators and those affected (teens) in these discussions. I agree that the horse has gone through the gate, but everyone must take responsibility. We have friends, children, relatives etc. who we know are arming themselves and how many of us really care to put our life on the block, stick our necks out and tell them they are destroying themselves. We need to take responsibility and end some of the slackness. We need to examine some of the so called “rights” we say we have and explore the greater good of a better society. I call on the legislators to look at what we have done to our parents, teachers and children. We have taken a much of the responsibility of parenting and instruction, through the disguise of abuse and have placed all the responsibility on those (children) who can’t even decide what is good for them or not….
